Making God In Our Image - Day 4

So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt."

Exodus 32:3-4

The Israelites took a blessing God had given them -- all the gold they had collected from the Egyptians -- melted it down and made a gold idol. God gave them the gold as a gift as they left Egypt. And what did the Israelites do with that blessing? They began to worship it!

The Israelites turned from God, who had rescued them with miracle after miracle, to worship this new god that they made with their hands. Did you note the irony? They doubted God with the gold he miraculously provided! We are tempted to do the same thing. Will He provide? Will He answer prayer? When you have seasons where you cannot see God just look at what he has done. Look at what God has put in your hand. He is your source!

Money cannot answer your prayers. Position cannot save your marriage. Title cannot heal your cancer. Only God can turn things around in our lives. He is the only God worthy of our worship. Take some time today to examine your heart: is there any part of it that is worshipping your blessings? Remember, the blessings God has given you cannot become the god you serve.
