Kissing the Door of Heaven – Day 4

They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?” ... Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”

Matthew 26:22, 25

When Jesus told the disciples that one would betray him, they became emotional, wondering if he was speaking of them. Notice the disciples called Jesus Lord while Judas called him rabbi or teacher. There's a big difference between Lord and rabbi. Judas' reply showed that he had a knowledge of Jesus, but not a faith in him.

We can know a lot but not commit. Judas had spent all that time with Jesus but didn't really recognize who he was. He asked, "Is it me?" but was he really wondering if he'd messed up? We can listen to a message preached but never really ask ourselves: Where did I mess up? Sometimes we do things and have no idea of the implications; we all need to look in the mirror. Take the log out of our own eye before pointing out the speck in someone else's. Those who betray others may never understand the damage they've caused. Sometimes we don't realize that our one post can have an enormous impact. Sin always hides its true cost; it's never a sale or a discount. It's usually quite the opposite: sin costs more than its price tag. Judas' 30 pieces of silver would wind up costing him and others so much more than that.

You may not be a Judas, but you could exhibit Judas behavior. Today take some time to reflect over your life and see if there are areas where you might have a log that needs removing. When you move beyond a knowledge OF Jesus and instead have a faith IN him, you can trust his grace isn't just waiting for you, it's reaching for you. Not only did Jesus forgive the disciples who abandoned him at the cross, but he invited them to share his love with the world. Had Judas not ended his life, had he instead turned back to Jesus, having faith IN him, his story would likely have ended differently. How will your story go? Will you run toward the one who loves you, reaches for you and gives you opportunities for a life in him?
