Here Comes the Light – Part 2 – Day 3

Stand firm then ... with the breastplate of righteousness in place ...

Ephesians 6:14

Light produces the fruit of righteousness. When we wear it as a breastplate, it protects our heart from attack and sin. To put righteousness in place, it means we're keeping a right character toward God and people.

There's a difference between self-righteous thinking and righteousness. When we're self-righteous, we think we're better than others. But righteousness protects us and is about how we live on an ongoing basis. In a broken world with toxic environments, we live rightly based on who we are -- not who others are. It looks like a number of things, including modeling the grace we receive, giving generously and being kind. The world may live in a payback culture, but we pay it forward.

How are you putting on the breastplate of righteousness? A breastplate guards your heart because everything flows from it (Proverbs 4:23). David asked God to create in him a clean heart and to put a new and right spirit within him (Psalm 51:10-12 NRSV). You can pray that over yourself today, and let your good deeds and right character shine his light on others.
