On The Brink - Day 4

And God spoke all these words: "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me."

Exodus 20:1-3

Several months after rescuing the Israelites from a life of slavery in Egypt, God called Moses to Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments to share with the people of Israel. But after Moses had been away 40 days, the people grew tired of waiting for his return and made their own gods to worship. Gods they created with their own hands.

But who heard Israel's cries in Egypt? Who parted the Red Sea? Who led Israel through the wilderness? Fed them with manna and quail? Brought water out of a rock? Thwarted Israel's enemies from destroying them? Why would God be anti-idol? Or against other gods? Because then we surrender our lives to things that have no power. We surrender our purpose and destiny to a perpetrator and a fraud. A knock off. It might make you feel good in the moment, but it's not real. God is not a cosmic killjoy! But why give your life to things without power when you have have a life-giving God? Why give your life to a knock off when you can have the real thing?

Are you giving your life to a knock off? Is there another god in your life before the life-giving God? He wants to bless you, and he wants you to have the real thing, not a fake. Will you take some time to be honest with yourself about any knock offs you might be idolizing? If so, confess it to God and be open to what he wants to give you in exchange: himself.
