They answered him, "We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be free?"
Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed’”
Jesus taught the Jews who believed in him about being set free. Their response revealed their spiritual amnesia. Their nation had been slaves in Egypt for four-hundred years and held captive in Babylon for seventy years, yet they said they had never been slaves. Jesus did not correct them, instead he refocused his point. They were slaves to sin and did not value the freedom they were being offered.
The religious leaders were living in their elite status leading a nation with little to no idea of the value of what had been passed down to them from past generations. They also devalued the freedom Jesus offered. They had forgotten the struggle of their ancestors and lacked appreciation for God's deliverance.
Remembering is important so we might appreciate the price that was paid for us. Today, reflect on the sacrifice Jesus gave to set you free from your sin by reading Matthew 27:26-50. Close your time in prayer, thanking him for setting you free.
